The International District Heating Summit 2025 opened on 29 October with a full day of site visits across Zealand, giving participants firsthand experience of Denmark’s most innovative heating systems.
Two parallel tour tracks offered unique insights into both large-scale and local district heating solutions.
Participants visiting Vestforbrænding and Envafors explored how major utilities are advancing CO₂-neutral energy through waste incineration, carbon capture, geothermal energy, and large-scale biomass and solar integration.
The second track visited Hillerød Forsyning, Smørum Kraftvarme, and Albertslund Forsyning, where smaller, community-based systems demonstrated flexible and scalable approaches to heat supply – including surplus heat recovery from industry, electrification with heat pumps, and low-temperature network design.
Throughout the day, utility experts and system operators shared strategies, challenges, and lessons learned with an international audience of district heating professionals. The tours concluded with a networking dinner in Copenhagen, where participants continued the discussions sparked by the day’s visits.
The site tours marked a powerful start to the Summit – highlighting how Danish utilities are leading the way toward sustainable, secure, and scalable district heating.
The trip is arranged in close collaboration with Brundtland and the Danish District Heating Association.
