On 24 October, Billund Varmeværk (utility) officially inaugurated its new production and administration facilities at Rugmarken — a milestone project designed to deliver cheaper, greener, and more future-proof district heating to the citizens and businesses of Billund.
The new plant features a 30 MW electric boiler and 16 MW heat pumps, enabling large-scale heat production with significantly reduced CO₂ emissions. The system also includes a 50 MVA 60/10 kV transformer, a new switching station, and a 10,000 m³ thermal storage tank, allowing heat production to be shifted to times when electricity is both cheaper and greener. The facility is furthermore prepared to utilize surplus heat from local industries.
The project, delivered on time and well below budget, was completed with Ingeniør Huse as the total consultant. It comprises a 999 m² technical building and a 650 m² administration building, bringing operations and staff together under one roof.
Chairman Erik Eskildsen described the new facility as “an important step into the future” and the culmination of several years of dedicated work.
The Billund project is one among several district heating initiatives realized by Ingeniør Huse this year, alongside developments in Jægerspris and Viborg — all contributing to Denmark’s transition toward a sustainable and resilient heating sector.
