DBDH hosted a study tour for a delegation from the Greater Hamburg region

From May 20 to 22, 2025, DBDH hosted a study tour for a delegation from the Greater Hamburg region. Organised in collaboration with Erneuerbare Energien Hamburg (EEHH) and the General Consulate of Hamburg, the event brought together over 20 stakeholders—including city planners, energy experts, and utility representatives—for a deep dive into Denmark’s cutting-edge district heating landscape.

Kick-off in Sønderborg: ProjectZero

The tour began in Sønderborg, where participants were introduced to the ambitious ProjectZero, aiming for a CO₂-neutral municipality by 2029. Presentations by Sønderborg Varme and Danfoss offered valuable insights into cost-effective heat production, digital planning tools, and public-private partnerships that are shaping the future of sustainable energy.

Site visits: Innovation in action

A series of site visits highlighted Danish leadership in integrating renewable energy sources into district heating. In Vojens, the group explored one of Europe’s largest solar thermal installations and heat storage systems, along with a presentation by Aalborg CSP. In Egtved and Horsens, they observed hybrid heating systems combining biomass, heat pumps, and waste-to-energy technologies. At TVIS in Fredericia, discussions focused on surplus heat recovery and strategic heat transmission across multiple municipalities.

Workshop: Exploring German-Danish collaboration

The program concluded with a collaborative workshop exploring possibilities for German-Danish cooperation. Delegates engaged in discussions on emerging technologies, investment needs, and policy strategies to accelerate the green transition on both sides of the border.

Building lasting partnerships

This hands-on experience fostered meaningful connections, offered direct exposure to innovative solutions, and laid the groundwork for future cross-border partnerships. DBDH was delighted to facilitate this important dialogue and looks forward to continued collaboration with our German colleagues in advancing sustainable district energy.
