The Danish District Heating Association has become part of Hydrogen Denmark.

PRESS RELEASE | Hydrogen Denmark is again expanding its membership, this time with the Danish District Heating Association. The Danish district heating sector is an important part of the value chain to exploit the full potential of future green hydrogen and PtX production in Denmark.

Hydrogen Denmark’s strategic partnership brings together several key players focused on strengthening the Danish industrial development and scaling up green hydrogen and Power-to-X. Hydrogen Denmark aims to secure Denmark’s position as a leading country in a completely new industrial adventure.

Now Hydrogen Denmark is strengthened by the Danish District Heating Association, also entering into the strategic collaboration. The Danish District Heating Association contributes with experience from a well-established infrastructure that will become the core of, among other things, utilizing the excess heat from hydrogen and PtX production and supplying biogenic CO2 for the production of green fuels. Danish district heating is a remarkable success that contributes positively to the green transition and effectively utilizes resources to benefit the security of supply.

Therefore, it is natural that the Danish District Heating Association is included in the work to make Danish green hydrogen an integrated export solution.

“We are delighted to become part of Hydrogen Denmark. The district heating sector plays a significant role in the Danish goal of a successful green transition. In the case of hydrogen and PtX production, district heating can improve energy efficiency, economy, and climate contribution by utilizing excess heat from the processes. In addition, in the district heating sector, we have a great potential for capturing biogenic CO2 from waste energy and biomass plants, which is a necessary part of the production of the green hydrocarbons that in the future will power, e.g., planes and ships”, says Kim Mortensen, director of the Danish District Heating Association.

There are great perspectives in sector coupling and efficient energy utilization by including the district heating infrastructure in the hydrogen and PtX circuit. It is both about excess heat from the electrolysis plants and the utilization of biogenic CO2 as a valuable resource in the production of the green fuels of the future. Denmark has every opportunity to become a global leader in producing and exporting green fuels and complete, circular solutions. Here, the Danish District Heating Association is an important player”, says Tejs Laustsen Jensen, Director of the Hydrogen Industry.

The Danish District Heating Association is one of Denmark’s largest trade associations. It is the interest organization for the country’s 354 district heating companies, which supply around 66 percent of all Danish homes with green and efficient heat. Today, district heating is produced using 76% renewable energy, and the industry aims to run on 100% renewable energy by 2030.
