ABB – a Technology Leader in Electrification and Automation

by Linda Bertelsen
With one of the largest product and system portfolios for the district energy industry, we are an ideal partner to take district heating and cooling (DHC) projects to a whole new level of performance, cost-effectiveness, and efficiency.

Core Offerings

ABB’s core offerings for DHC includes:

  • Advanced automation and control systems, with a dedicated district energy library, value-creating automation, optimization, and data communication solutions, along with interfaces to third-party equipment.
  • Comprehensive electrical systems within High, Medium, and Low Voltage, covering power system analysis, electrical design, power quality, and system protection for all plant areas.
  • Motors, Variable Speed Drives, and Instrumentation.
  • Digital solutions for energy planning and online optimization and solutions for predictive and condition-based maintenance.

District Heating and Cooling

District heating and cooling require a complex network of transmission and distribution pipes to deliver heat or cooling to various types of consumers. Each aspect of generating, capturing, converting, transmitting, and distributing energy should ideally be combined into a single, integrated system. This includes the essential process, electrical, instrumentation and control equipment.

Sector Coupling

Sector coupling involves managing district heating networks and diverse heat sources, including combined heat and power stations, biomass plants, waste heat capture, heat pumps, solar thermal installations, and renewable energy from solar and wind.

Further, Power-to-X technology, which converts electrical power into other energy forms like hydrogen and ammonia, will be increasingly important in the sector coupling as the process can deliver surplus heat to the networks.

ABB addresses the challenges of interconnecting these sectors with advanced automation and optimization systems, high-efficiency motors, and variable-speed drives to optimize energy consumption and system performance.

Energy Efficiency

Energy efficiency in DHC systems relies on effective integration and holistic consideration of all components – from production to consumers. ABB’s deep understanding of the underlying processes and technologies enables efficient, integrated solutions to improve the business case in the industry.

Our solutions reduce energy consumption, thereby minimizing costs and lowering carbon emissions.
