The City of Burnaby and the Burnaby Board of Trade are hosting a follow-up event to the highly successful Burnaby Clean Energy Summit. This event will explore the future of district energy in Burnaby, with insights drawn from global best practices. A distinguished panel, including European researchers and practitioners, as well as a representative from the City of Burnaby, will discuss the forthcoming Burnaby District Energy Utility. Key topics include emerging business opportunities, lessons from established markets, and the role of socially sustainable business models in driving project success.

This event offers a chance to engage with peers in the energy sector, including business leaders, academic experts, and city officials invested in district energy initiatives. Attendees will also enjoy networking opportunities and a special welcome address from Mayor Mike Hurley of Burnaby.

Hanne Kortegaard Støchkel, Danish Board of District Heating
Hanne is the Project Development Manager at the Danish Board of District Heating (DBDH). She works with innovation and knowledge-sharing of sector integration, focusing on creating value with district heating. Hanne oversees DBDH international projects, which include projects in Germany, UK, The Netherlands, Poland, Canada, France, and Ukraine.

Kristina is an intrapreneur in district energy, and the current Senior Expert at the Swedish Environment Research Institute (IVL). In addition, Kristina is also an adjunct professor in efficient energy systems sciences at the Lund University,

Paul Holt, Vice President Engineering & Operations at Corix Energy
Paul successfully oversaw the transition of Simon Fraser University (SFU) and the ‘UniverCity’ Residential neighborhood to low carbon via the construction of a $43m, 13.5MW Biomass facility and hot water distribution system. Paul is a Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) in BC, a Chartered Engineer (CEng) in the UK and is a member of the board of directors for the International District Energy Association (IDEA).

James Lota, General Manager Lands and Facilities, City of Burnaby
James is a Professional Engineer with a Bachelor of Applied Science from the University of British Columbia, a Master of Business Administration from Simon Fraser University and a Master of Public Administration from the University of Victoria.

Johanna Ayrault, Researcher at the Research Institute for Urban Management and Governance at the Vienna University of Economics and Business
Johanna is a postdoctoral researcher at the Research Institute for Urban Management and Governance of the Vienna University of Economics and Business (WU Wien). Her research focuses on the collaborative governance of green district heating systems, as a lever for more social and societal sustainability.

Emily Doan, Senior Policy Analyst with Natural Resources Canada’s Office of Energy Research & Development
Emily is a Senior Policy Analyst with Natural Resources Canada’s Office of Energy Research & Development. Her work is focused on the applications of techno-economic analysis in the context of energy R&D. She holds a Master of Resource Management from Simon Fraser University. During her time at SFU, she modeled a variety of policy pathways that British Columbia could pursue to meet its GHG reduction targets.
