DK-UA Energy Hub – Rebuilding District Heating in Mykolayiv, Ukraine

The EIFO Green Accelerator project in the Ukrainian city Mykolayiv is implemented by an alliance of three leading Danish companies – Kamstrup, Justsen, and Danfoss – in close collaboration with DBDH. The initiative is supported by the EIFO Green Accelerator Facility and contributes to Denmark’s broader efforts to support Ukraine’s sustainable recovery, with a strong focus on rebuilding Mykolayiv.

This project is centered around developing a Strategic Development Plan for Mykolayiv’s district heating utility (MOTE). The plan will guide the utility’s future modernization efforts and integrate best practices from Denmark’s energy sector. A key component of the plan is the assessment of biomass availability in the region, which will serve as a foundation for sustainable heat generation and long-term energy resilience.
The participating Danish companies contribute their expertise and technologies to support green district heating solutions:

  • Kamstrup delivers advanced metering solutions to enable data-driven heat management and improve operational efficiency.
  • Justsen specializes in biomass boiler systems, helping transition Mykolayiv away from fossil fuels using locally available renewable resources.
  • Danfoss brings energy-efficient components and system optimization solutions that reduce energy waste and enhance performance across the heating network.

The project is a concrete example of Denmark’s commitment to supporting Ukraine, not only by providing technology but by investing in long-term partnerships. It facilitates close collaboration between the Mykolayiv DH utility, Danish technology providers, Danish Embassy in Kyiv, with the advisory support from the DH expert Lars Gullev and ensure both technical excellence and stakeholder alignment.

The project sets the stage for broader replication across Ukraine and aligns with national and municipal goals to decarbonize and modernize district heating systems.
